Comeback Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in Nearly 30 Months
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been earned on hard courts
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his first title for 882 days with a win over opponent Moutet in the competition final.
The athlete, a ex- world number one, has experienced a difficult year, winning just one win at the big events and suffering a setback at the New York tournament.
Medvedev's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and issues with his serving in especial - caused him exiting of the elite rankings and finally splitting with long-time trainer Gilles Cervara.
Now collaborating with his coach and his other coach, the tennis star has consistently improved in the last few weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over opponent Corentin Moutet.
This marks Medvedev's initial trophy following the Italian tournament and initial on a hard court after March of the previous year.
Success also means Medvedev has won twenty-one victories at 21 distinct competitions.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a competition with my children at once, so to win a trophy is really nice," commented world number 14 Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my child her name, because the first title I won when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."
Medvedev, the former major winner, had failed in his past six finals, featuring in that event previously this season.
His counter-punching play style and frequent emotional displays on court had led commentators to wonder if his skill to perform at the highest level was concluded.
But the player has made changes in recent weeks, making an effort to approach the net and play assertively, backed up by an better service.
The champion recovered from a break down in the opening set against the challenging Moutet, taking 4 of the last five games to gain the advantage.
The pair traded breaks in the second set before Moutet, attempting for his maiden professional title, seized the initiative to force a decider.
The opponent saved four initial opportunities in a tight deciding set before the Russian broke to that score to close out the victory.
Appropriately, the winner secured victory with a rally at the net, with his opponent unable to manage a shot after a lengthy match.
